PREVENTATIVE CARE

Preventative care is our main focus
Preventative dentistry is concerned with preventing disease rather than treating it. We ensure that you know correct oral care procedures as it saves you time, inconvenience, discomfort, and money. Our aim is for every patient to get to the point of optimal dental health, and maintain it with ongoing preventative care. Preventative care is best in every way - time, effort, and cost.

The Preventative Care Consultation
We recommend that you have a visit with the dentist every six months for preventative care. We want to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. We will listen carefully and attempt to answer any questions you might have about your dental health.

During the consultation, we will:

  • provide you with a thorough dental exam
  • provide a periodontal screening
  • perform an oral cancer exam
  • take necessary x-rays
  • perform preventive teeth cleaning and scaling
  • answer your questions as well as give advice and instruction on oral hygiene care and products.
Daily Preventative Care
In order to maintain excellent gum and teeth health, we recommend that you use:
  • A soft bristle tooth brush to clean the teeth and gums. Twice a day in a light pressure circular motion.  Removing the plaque not only prevents decay and gum disease it also eliminates the bacteria, which causes bad breath.
  • Electric toothbrushes - The electric toothbrush is more effective in teeth and gum cleaning than manual tooth brushing. Not only does it remove plaque more effectively, it also reduces the potential damage that manual tooth brushing can create through vigorous brushing and is fun for children to use.
  • Interdental cleaning - It is advisable to use dental floss or interdental brushes at least once a day to remove accumulated food and plaque that collects in between the teeth, that the toothbrush bristles are unable to reach.
  • Antibacterial mouthwashes - Antibacterial mouthwashes are used to destroy the bacteria, which causes bad breath, provides a fresh taste and reduces the bacteria, which causes gingivitis.
  • Tongue cleaner - We recommend the cleaning of the surface of the tongue part of your daily dental hygiene program. Plaque adheres to the top surface of the tongue as it does your teeth and gums.  It has been suggested that the scraping of the tongue and keeping the teeth clean reduces the incidence of bad breath by 85%.
